I See This A Lot in Peoples Yards

When planting a new tree in your yard, sometimes it's a good idea to put in a few stakes and brace the tree until the roots have a chance to establish themselves.  The amount of time that each tree requires varies but one thing that you don't want to do is let the braces damage the tree.  Here's a tree that we just trimmed that had never been trimmed before.  Once we got the tree cleaned up it revealed that the wire and rubber hose were growing into the tree and damaging the tree in ways that will effect the growth and health of the tree for years to come.  It was also cutting into the tree leaving a wound that invites ants and other unwanted insects.  The wire and hose can be removed using some pliers and wire cutters and the wound sealed with tree cote pruning seal, but it will still be a weak spot in a crucial part of the tree that can keep it from being as healthy and beautiful as it was meant to be.  Hopefully we caught this in time.  But if you have braces in your tree, check them!  If the roots are well established and it doesn't need to be braced anymore, take them out.  If it still does need to be braced a bit longer, move the brace up or down so you can examine the tree to make sure it's not being negatively effected.  It's good to move the brace to another spot so it doesn't grow into the tree like in the pictures below.  If healthy and beautiful trees are important to you then this is one quick and easy thing you could do to protect your investment.
